Kids? Kids scan the ground like it’s a game. They pick up everything. They inspect everything. They don’t “assume it’s nothing.”
That’s basically the perfect mindset for fossil hunting.
You don’t need special tools. You don’t need a lab coat. You don’t even need to know what you’re looking for.
You need three things:
- Curiosity (kids have infinite supply)
- Patience (kids will stare at a rock for five minutes for no reason)
- Zero expectations (the secret ingredient)
Most beginner fossil-hunters start with something simple: shark teeth. Along certain coastlines, they’re surprisingly common — tiny black triangles hiding in sand and shell beds.
But every once in a while, someone finds something that makes the local experts stop what they’re doing.
