Elena didn’t hesitate.
She ran into the rain, her shoes slipping on cracked asphalt.
The man’s lips were blue. His eyes unfocused. His voice barely there.
She pushed his wheelchair inside with all her strength.
Wrapped him in the diner’s only spare blanket.
Turned the kitchen back on even though it was already shut down.
She reheated leftover soup.
Sat across from him in a booth.
And fed him slowly, one spoon at a time.
No rush.
No discomfort.
Just dignity.
She didn’t know anyone was watching.
