Voices drifted from the patio. Laughter.
I crouched by the window, heart in my throat.

Drinking my Christmas bourbon.
Phoebe’s hand on his thigh. Such familiarity.
The “birthday surprise,” Finn said. Another joke?
They planned it all. I had heard enough.
