In a nursery the size of her entire apartment, Vince stood with the baby in his arms.
His face was stripped of pride.
“He won’t take anything,” Vince said, voice rough. “Doctors are talking about feeding tubes. Please.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
This wasn’t a request.
This was a man cornered by love for a child he didn’t know how to save.
“I’ll help,” she said quietly. “One week.”
Vince nodded once. “You’ll be safe here.”
Then, softer, darker:
“In old families… the woman who feeds the boss’s child becomes protected.”
Claire swallowed. “Protected by who?”
Vince’s eyes locked onto hers.
“By me.”
And Claire realized the terrifying part wasn’t that he meant it.
It was that she believed him.
