Why had Minnesota’s investigative agency been cut out of the case?

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension had publicly stated that it was barred from accessing evidence, interviews, and scene materials.

Vance’s response was sharp.

“First of all,” he said, “I wish state officials in Minnesota would investigate why you have so many people using vehicles and other means to interfere with a legitimate law enforcement operation.”

He then laid out the administration’s reasoning.

“You have a federal law enforcement official engaging in federal law enforcement action,” Vance said. “That’s a federal issue.”

In his view, state involvement was neither necessary nor appropriate.
