I walked out with a settlement, a share of the home’s value, and the only thing I wanted more than revenge:
My life back.
Months later, the hospital called. He’d been admitted with complications from neglect. They wanted me to come.
I stared at my clean apartment. My quiet. My name on my mailbox.
And I replied with one sentence:
“I am legally divorced. Please contact his son.”
I didn’t go.
Not because I was cruel.
Because I was finally free.
