After I Loudly Complained to a Grocery Store Manager That a “Filthy” Homeless Man Had Touched the Bread and Demanded It Be Thrown Away in Front of Everyone, I Never Imagined That Just Three Nights Later He Would Be the One Running Into a Burning Building to Save My Daughter

The cashier blinked. “Ma’am, the packaging is sealed—”

“That doesn’t matter,” I insisted. “People expect sanitary conditions.”

Nearby shoppers began watching. The man turned toward us, confusion crossing his face.

“I wasn’t stealing,” he said quietly. “Just checking the price.”

His voice wasn’t defensive. That somehow irritated me more.
