The Numbers Show Why Money Became Central to the Conversation
There is no question that raising a child requires substantial resources. Argentina’s national statistics agency, INDEC, publishes a monthly estimate known as the child-rearing basket. It combines the price of essential goods and services with the economic value of the time spent caring for a child.
For July 2026, INDEC estimated that the monthly cost ranged from 545,683 Argentine pesos for a baby under one year old to 697,268 pesos for a child between six and twelve. The amount differed by age because food, clothing, education and care needs change as children grow.
Those figures help explain why Rodríguez’s video connected with so many people. Families are not imagining the pressure. Even parents who work and carefully manage their money can feel overwhelmed by rising prices, housing expenses, childcare and unexpected medical bills.
But the figures prove only that children are expensive. They do not establish that a person’s income at one moment can predict whether that person will be a loving, capable or responsible parent over the next eighteen years.
Critics Said the Message Punished People for Being Poor
The strongest criticism was not directed at the idea of planning. It was directed at the suggestion that an entire economic group should be excluded from parenthood.
