Then the doctor placed a hand on his shoulder, nodded once, and walked back through the doors.

Rob remained standing for a moment after the doctor disappeared, as if his body had forgotten how to move. The waiting room was silent except for the faint hum of the overhead lights and the distant beeping of medical equipment somewhere deeper inside the hospital.
