Faint.
Nervous.
And unmistakably coming from my daughter Emma’s room.
Emma was nine years old, and she had never been the kind of child who stayed awake past midnight, let alone three in the morning. I slipped out of bed and stepped into the hallway, the cold wooden floor creaking slightly under my feet as I moved toward her door. The light beneath it was on, a thin yellow line cutting across the carpet like a warning sign.
I knocked gently.
“Emma?”
No answer.
