Ryan snatched the papers and scanned the first line with the confidence of a man used to bluffing.
His confidence lasted about four seconds.
He frowned. “E.M. Holdings, LLC… what is this?”
“Elena Marie Holdings,” I said, sipping my coffee. “My company.”
He scoffed. “So what? We’re married. It’s marital property.”
“Incorrect,” I said. “Page two. Clause 4, Section B.”
He flipped, eyes darting.
He started reading out loud, slower and slower:
“Assets acquired prior to the marriage remain the sole property…”
His voice tightened. “Property held by a separate corporate entity is excluded from marital division…”
Karen barged in and grabbed the document. “Ryan told me he paid the down payment!”
I laughed—short and sharp. “Ryan told you a lot of things.”
I didn’t raise my voice. I listed facts.
- I bought the apartment four months before the wedding.
- The LLC owns it.
- I’m the sole shareholder.
- Ryan never paid the mortgage, HOA, or taxes.
Ryan threw the papers on the floor like anger could change ink.
“I’m not leaving,” he yelled. “Make me.”
I nodded once. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
I picked up my phone. “Officer? You can come in now.”
The door—still slightly ajar—opened wider.
Two NYPD officers stepped in for a civil standby.
Ryan’s face drained fast. “What is this?”
I handed the deed and notarized ownership affidavit to the older officer.
He scanned it, then looked at Ryan.
“Sir,” the officer asked plainly, “is your name on the deed?”
Ryan stammered. “No, but—”
“Is your name on a lease?”
“We’re married!” Ryan shouted.
The officer’s tone hardened. “According to this, the property is owned by an LLC. The owner is requesting you vacate. You have five minutes to gather essentials.”
Five minutes.
