Be Very Careful: If You Notice This Skin Growth, It Could Be Serious

It’s Not Just Moles: Other Skin Growths That Deserve a Look

Moles get all the attention, but they’re not the only skin changes that matter.

Some growths look nothing like a “classic” mole and still need evaluation—especially when they appear on sun-exposed areas.

Common examples doctors watch closely

  • Actinic keratoses: Rough, scaly patches often caused by sun damage. They can be persistent and may need treatment.
  • Basal cell carcinoma: Can appear as a pearly or waxy bump, sometimes with visible tiny blood vessels, often on sun-exposed skin.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: May look like a firm red bump or a flat lesion with a crusted surface.
  • Seborrheic keratosis: Often harmless and “stuck-on” looking, but sometimes confused with more serious lesions.

The problem is that pictures online can be misleading.

Different skin tones, lighting, and camera quality can make harmless growths look scary—or make serious ones look mild.

That’s why pattern recognition matters more than any single photo.

New. Changing. Bleeding. Non-healing. Rapid growth.

Those are the signals that should move a spot to the top of your priority list.
