Alicia Sanders-Zakre, head of policy at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, mentioned the possibility of the clock moving ‘by at least one second’. She expressed concerns over the existential threat posed by more than 12,000 nuclear weapons worldwide.
She explained that while the risk of nuclear use has loomed for 80 years, recent increases in nuclear arms investments, threatening rhetoric, and the use of artificial intelligence in militaries have exacerbated the threat.
Meanwhile, Hamza Chaudhry, AI and national security lead at the Future of Life Institute, anticipates the clock could move between five and ten seconds forward due to the impending expiration of the New START Treaty — a key factor in nuclear arms control.
