Family Gives Heartbreaking Update on Baby After Brain-Dead Mom Was Kept Alive Under Abortion Law

“It’s Holiday Season and I’m Very Down” – A Grandmother’s Update

Months after the birth, Adriana’s mother, April Newkirk, shared an emotional update about baby Chance’s condition on the fundraiser page.

She wrote:

“It’s holiday season and I’m very down. Chance is 11 pounds still in the NIC unit and will not be coming home soon. He going to be moved to a different hospital for more help with his health, and I want everyone to know that I’m very grateful for your prays and help. Continue to pray because God has the final say so.”

Earlier, on October 14, April had shared several photos of Chance and another update:

“Chance’s lungs are underdeveloped, so he will stay in the NICU until his breathing gets better. Chase saw his little brother by video. This was a touching moment, thank you all for your prayers and support. Keep praying.”

While Chance is growing, his medical journey is far from over. Every pound gained and every stable day in the NICU is a small victory, but the emotional and financial toll on the family is enormous.

What Georgia’s Abortion Laws Meant for Adriana

Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade, Georgia has become one of the states with the strictest abortion laws in the U.S. Under current rules, termination is only allowed when it is necessary:

  • To save the pregnant person’s life, or
  • To preserve their physical health, or
  • If the fetus is not expected to survive the pregnancy.

On top of that, Georgia’s fetal personhood laws define a fetus as a legal person from the moment of conception.

In Adriana’s case, doctors had determined that:

  • She was brain-dead, with no chance of recovery.
  • The pregnancy itself was not what caused her medical emergency.
  • The fetus had a significant chance of survival if carried further.

That combination meant that turning off life support would likely have been considered illegal, because it would end the life of a fetus the state legally recognized as a person.

As a result, Adriana’s family could not choose to let her pass naturally. Instead, they had to watch her body kept alive for weeks, solely to support a pregnancy she would never know about.
