Evelyn’s voice followed, small and trembling. “I’m sorry, dear… my hands—”
A gasp.
Damian stepped toward the sitting room and froze at the doorway. Lauren stood over Evelyn, gripping her wrist so tightly the skin had blanched white. A teacup lay shattered at their feet.
Lauren pressed a napkin roughly to Evelyn’s mouth. “If you tell Damian another lie about me,” Lauren hissed, “I will put you in a facility so far away he’ll forget you exist.”
Evelyn’s eyes were wet. Terrified. Damian stepped inside, voice low and lethal. “Let. Go.”
