The man turned slowly, caught off guard but composed.
“Is there a problem?” he asked.
“Let’s not do this here,” the officer replied. “We need to see some identification.”
A few customers nearby paused, sensing the shift. Conversations softened. A phone was quietly lifted.
“I’m just getting coffee,” the man said evenly. “Am I being detained?”
“Sir, don’t make this harder than it needs to be,” the second officer added, tone tightening. “ID. Now.”
The man didn’t raise his voice, but he didn’t comply either.
