A ripe watermelon usually leaves a few simple clues right on its skin.

So before you bring home your next watermelon, check these five things.
1. Look at the Field Spot
Turn the watermelon over and look for the large patch where it rested on the ground while growing.
This is called the field spot.
A watermelon that spent enough time ripening on the vine will often have a creamy yellow or deep buttery-yellow patch.
