Inside was a silver box.

And inside that box sat the sapphire brooch.

When court reconvened, Vivian’s composure cracked fast.

Her story shifted.

Then shifted again.

Contradictions piled up like dirty dishes.

The judge didn’t take long.

“Marlene Ortiz is hereby acquitted of all charges,” he declared.

Marlene stood frozen.

Like her lungs forgot how to work.

Then Oliver ran to her and wrapped his arms around her waist, sobbing into her dress.

“I told the truth,” he choked out. “They can’t take you away.”

Preston stepped forward, voice low and broken.

“Marlene… I’m sorry,” he said. “I let my grief blind me. I should have protected you.”

Marlene wiped her tears carefully.

“Your son protected me,” she said.

Vivian was escorted out under guard.

Fury in her eyes.

But no power left in her hands.

The cameras flashed.

Reporters whispered.

Marlene didn’t look at any of them.

She kept her eyes on Oliver.

Because he was the only reason she wasn’t leaving the courthouse in handcuffs.
