A Fast Pattern Check You Can Do in 60 Seconds
- Clusters/lines of bumps on exposed skin (arms/shoulders/neck): more consistent with insect bites.
- Extreme itch at night + wrists/finger webs/waistline involvement: raises suspicion for scabies.
- Broad patches, welts, or widespread itch where clothing touches: points toward contact dermatitis/hives.
Also check for “environment clues”:
- Did the child come back wearing different clothes from the friend’s house?
- Did he nap on a couch or sleep over there?
- Any pets at the friend’s house (fleas are a common culprit)?
- Any new detergent, blanket, or spray used recently?
What not to do:
- Don’t start random leftover antibiotics or strong steroid creams without advice.
- Don’t “fog-bomb” your home for bugs without confirming—this often creates more problems than it solves.
- Don’t ignore severe itching that’s spreading quickly.
Now the most important part: when this is urgent versus annoying.
