My hands were shaking when I grabbed my phone. I live alone out here. No neighbors for half a mile. And this stranger was on the edge of my land, digging a hole and lowering that bundle into the ground like he’d done it before.
I called 911. Told them everything. Gave them my address and said hurry.
Then I did something stupid. I walked out there myself.
He heard me coming and turned around. And this man, this huge terrifying biker, had tears running down into his beard. He looked at me and his voice cracked when he said, “Please. Just give me ten more minutes with her.”
I stopped about twenty feet away. My heart was going so hard I could hear it in my ears.
“Her?” I said.
He nodded. He couldn’t seem to get any more words out. He just looked down into that hole, and his shoulders started to shake.
