Worse.
Some comments were cruel in a casual way — like tearing someone down was entertainment.
Others were so ugly they made my throat tighten.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to throw his phone out the window.
I wanted to humiliate him back.
But then something else happened.
The anger cooled into clarity.
Sam thought public shame would make me smaller.
He thought I would panic, apologize, and clean.
So I walked into the living room, put on the softest voice I could manage, and hugged him.
“I’m sorry, honey,” I said. “I’m taking you out to a celebratory dinner tomorrow. To celebrate our reunion.”
He smiled like he’d won.
“It’ll be unforgettable,” he said.
And he was right.
Just not in the way he thought.
