I Fell for My Daughter-in-Law’s Grumpy Neighbor, but Thanksgiving Exposed the Awful Truth About Our Relationship

What I Heard in the Kitchen

Thanksgiving dinner smelled like butter and tension.

Kate was trying too hard to be cheerful, which is how you can tell someone is hiding something.

Peter arrived with a stiff nod and a bottle of wine, looking like he’d rather face a jury than a family dinner.

At one point, I noticed him slip into the kitchen.

Kate followed.

Something about it didn’t sit right.

Curious, I walked quietly down the hallway.

Not sneaking.

Observing.

I stopped at the kitchen doorway and listened.

Peter’s voice was low and controlled.

“Kate, I wanted to talk to you about the record player.”

Kate answered quickly, like she’d been rehearsing.

“Mr. Davis, I’ve already ordered it. It’ll arrive soon. You have no idea how grateful I am.”

Then she said the words that made my stomach turn.

“You’ve made my life so much easier. I don’t know how you put up with her… but soon the record player will be yours. Thank you for agreeing to this whole charade.”

Charade.

I felt heat flood my face.

So it wasn’t real.

Not fully.

Not the way I’d believed.

Anger surged up so fast it shocked even me.

I stormed into the kitchen.

“So this was a game?” I snapped, voice shaking. “All of it?”

Kate turned pale.

Peter froze like a man caught mid-crime.

Andrew rushed in, eyes wide.

“What’s going on?”

I pointed at Kate, then Peter.

“Your wife concocted a scheme against me.”

Andrew sighed like he’d been waiting for this moment.

“Mom,” he said carefully, “it wasn’t just her. It was my idea too.”

My throat tightened.

“Explain.”

Andrew swallowed.

“We thought you and Mr. Davis might make each other happy,” he admitted. “Neither of you would make the first move, so we gave him… encouragement.”

“Encouragement?” I repeated, voice rising.

Andrew looked at the floor.

“We offered him a record player,” he said. “In exchange for going on dates with you.”

It hit me like a slap.

A prize.

A bribe.

I wasn’t a woman rediscovering love.

I was a problem they were paying someone to manage.

Kate’s voice sharpened, the mask finally dropping.

“You were constantly interfering,” she snapped. “Nitpicking everything I did. I’m pregnant, and I couldn’t handle the stress. So yes, we came up with the plan. It worked. You finally had something to do, and I finally got a break.”

The truth stung because it wasn’t entirely false.

But humiliation stung more.

I looked at Peter.

“I could have expected this from her,” I said coldly. “But not from you.”

I turned and walked out.

My “injured” leg suddenly felt very real.

Behind me, I heard Peter call my name.

And then he said something that stopped me mid-step.
