After breakfast, she asked me to drive her to the pharmacy, then to the church office where she dropped off a sealed envelope for Mr. Carson.
I waited in the car with the engine running, watching her walk slowly up the sidewalk, and for the first time I wondered what she carried that she did not trust me to see.
When she returned, she was breathing harder than usual, but she still smiled as she buckled her seat belt.
“You worry too loudly,” she said, because I had not spoken and somehow she had still heard me.
“I’m not worried,” I lied.
