The blockade has already caused major disruptions to international shipping. More than 2,000 vessels have reportedly been stranded in the region since February, creating panic among global traders and causing oil prices to surge sharply.
On Friday, the US military announced that it had stopped two Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. According to Centcom, American forces fired precision munitions into the ships’ smokestacks to disable them without sinking the vessels.
