That was when he noticed them.
A woman and a little girl were walking several steps ahead of him near the intersection. The woman wore an elegant gray coat and carried a leather handbag that probably cost more than Daniel’s monthly rent. She appeared distracted, glancing down at her phone as she walked.
The child beside her, however, seemed to exist in a world of her own.
The girl was small, maybe five years old, with curly brown hair bouncing as she skipped along the sidewalk. In her hand she held a bright red balloon that bobbed cheerfully above her head, dancing lightly in the wind like a tiny floating planet.
For a moment, Daniel felt himself smile.
