Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed that assessment.

Speaking at a press conference, she defended the officer’s actions.

“Our officer followed his training,” Noem said. “He did exactly what he’s been taught to do in that situation—to defend himself and his fellow law enforcement officers.”

When pressed about the FBI investigation, Noem remained firm.

“We’ll let the FBI complete its work,” she said. “But I believe the officer acted according to his training.”
