The condition helps explain the swelling she experienced during rehabilitation and why her recovery has been more complicated than expected.
To carefully manage the pressure and protect the healing surgical site, doctors have placed an External Ventricular Drain (EVD).
Over the next several days, her medical team will slowly reduce their reliance on the drain while closely monitoring her brain pressure levels.
Their greatest hope is that Maya’s body will begin regulating the pressure naturally following the cranioplasty.
If that happens, she may be able to avoid yet another major procedure to place a permanent shunt.
