She looked toward the house.
Not at me.
At the house.
As if someone inside still controlled her answers.
“It’s nothing.”
The lie came too quickly.
Too automatically.
The way lies do when they’ve been practiced.
I stared at her.
She lowered her eyes.
And suddenly I realized something that made my stomach turn.
My daughter wasn’t protecting herself.
She was protecting them.
From inside the house came another burst of laughter.
Glasses clinked.
Someone cheered.
A football game played loudly on television.
Warmth.
Comfort.
Celebration.
While my daughter stood freezing in the dark.
Alone.
The contrast made my blood boil.
“Tell me the truth.”
She hesitated.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then another.
Finally, she whispered the words that would change everything.
“I corrected Jason.”
I blinked.
“What?”
“At dinner.”
Her voice shook.
“He told a story.”
“I said one small thing.”
“Just one.”
