My Ex Handed My Daughter To A Biker Gang And I Found Out On Facebook

The officer told me what I already knew was coming. There’d be a welfare investigation. Sarah was in serious trouble. Abandonment of a minor was a felony.

But Lily was safe. That was the only thing that mattered standing in that lot as the sun started going down.

Before they left, Walt crouched down to Lily one more time.

“You remember what I told you, little miss?”

Lily nodded seriously. “If I’m ever scared and lost, I find a grownup with a kind face and I ask for help. And I don’t ever stop trying to find the people who love me.”

“That’s right.” Walt smiled. His teeth were crooked and one was gold. “You’re gonna be just fine, kid. You’re tougher than most grown men I know.”

He stood up and looked at me. He pulled a card out of his vest. A real card. It had a phone number and a logo for a veterans’ motorcycle club.

“We do this,” he said. “Help people. It’s what the club’s for. Anything you and the little one ever need, you call. I mean that.”

I took the card. I didn’t have words. I shook his hand and I think I held it too long.

“I almost hit you,” I said. “I’m so sorry. I looked at you and I thought—”

“I know what you thought,” Walt said. There was no anger in it. “Everybody thinks it. We’re used to it. You came in swinging because you love your kid. Can’t fault a man for that.”

They started their bikes. Six engines, loud enough to rattle my chest. Lily covered her ears and grinned.

Then they rolled out in formation, and my daughter waved until she couldn’t see them anymore.

That was eight months ago.

Sarah is getting help now. Court-ordered, but help. I hope it works. For Lily’s sake, I hope she finds her way back. But she doesn’t have unsupervised time anymore, and she won’t for a long time.

I have full custody.

And Lily has six uncles she never expected.

Walt’s club adopted her, basically. They show up to her birthday. They came to her school’s career day and parked their bikes out front and Lily was the most popular kid in the third grade for a month.

Last weekend, Walt put a little helmet on her head and gave her a slow, careful ride around an empty parking lot while I watched, heart in my throat.

When they pulled back in, she had the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on a human being.
