The day Mark left, I found him stuffing clothes into a suitcase like he was late for a flight.
No explanation. No apology.
“What are you doing?” I asked, panic rising.
“What I should’ve done years ago,” he replied without looking at me.
Twenty-two years of marriage ended in that sentence.
Then he asked for his “half” of the savings.
I ran to my laptop.
The checking account: almost empty.
The savings account: zero.
Emma’s college fund — twelve years of careful saving, $75,000 — gone.
He had taken everything. Not just shared money. Our daughter’s future.
When he walked out the door, Emma watched him silently.
“Did he take my college money?” she asked.
I nodded.
She rinsed her cereal bowl, set it in the sink, and said evenly:
“Okay. I handled it.”
