Lydia froze.
Husband: “What performance?”
I slid my phone across the table, replaying the footage. My husband’s face went pale as he watched his mother sabotage my future.
Lydia sputtered, “I—That’s not what it looks like—”
Husband cut her off: “Mom, how could you?!”
She tried to play victim, as always, but the damage was done. My husband told her she wasn’t welcome in our home until she could respect me and my goals. And this time, I didn’t stop him.
I retook the exam. Passed with flying colors. And when graduation came, I walked across that stage knowing Lydia’s “lesson” had backfired spectacularly.
