“We Don’t Tell Mommy”
I asked my mother-in-law about it.
She brushed it off.
“Imaginary friends,” she said smoothly.
My gut screamed that she was lying.
So I did something I never thought I’d do.
I installed a hidden camera in the living room.
The next Wednesday, I went to work like normal.
By lunchtime, my hands were shaking as I opened the live feed.
At first, everything looked ordinary.
Then my mother-in-law checked her watch.
“Bev, sweetheart,” she said, smiling, “our friend will be here any minute.”
My daughter clapped.
“I love her!”

Then came the words that broke me:
“And remember,” my MIL said gently, “what we don’t tell Mommy.”
“Yes,” my daughter replied. “Not a word to Mom.”
