My throat locked.
“Is she…?”
“She’s alive,” the detective said. “But she’s at the hospital.”
I asked why.
And the detective looked away before answering.
“She was found in an abandoned shed two miles away,” she said. “She refused to come out until the officer promised you were the only one allowed to touch her.”
That sentence told me everything I didn’t want to know.
Because kids don’t negotiate touch unless they’ve learned it isn’t safe.
