At the time, none of it made sense.
Now it did.
Or at least it was beginning to.
Because hidden in that drawer was something my mother had never seen before.
Something she knew instantly my father never intended anyone to find.
She closed the drawer.
Then opened it again.
Her hands were shaking.
The object was still there.
Waiting.
For a long moment she simply stared at it, wondering whether she should put everything back exactly as she found it and pretend this moment had never happened.
But curiosity is a powerful thing.
Especially when it’s mixed with years of unanswered questions.
The truth was that my father had always kept parts of his life locked away.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
There was a storage room in the back of the house that nobody entered without permission.
There was an old metal box that remained locked no matter where we lived.
There were photographs he never displayed.
Stories he never told.
And memories he refused to discuss.
Whenever either of us asked about them, his answer was always the same.
“Some things are better left alone.”
Eventually we stopped asking.
Or at least we pretended to.
But my mother never stopped wondering.
Especially after she noticed the changes.
The sleepless nights.
The sudden mood swings.
The long silences at dinner.
The way he sometimes sat alone in the dark living room after midnight, staring at nothing.
And now, standing in his office with that mysterious object in her hands, she could no longer ignore the feeling that something important had been hidden from her for years.
Something that explained everything.
The day before, she had searched his office looking for answers.
What she found there only raised more questions.
And she had no idea that within the next twenty-four hours, she would uncover a truth capable of changing everything she thought she knew about her husband.
