The Part That Made the Realtor Step Back
Derek tried to recover.
He switched tactics instantly—because that’s what controlling people do.
He laughed like it was all a misunderstanding.
“Mom, what is this? You’re being dramatic. We’re trying to help you.”
I didn’t answer him.
I turned to the realtor instead.
“Before you step inside,” I said, “you should know there will be no signatures today.”
The realtor stiffened.
“Derek told me—”
“Derek isn’t the homeowner,” I said calmly. “And Derek isn’t authorized to act on my behalf.”
That’s when my attorney’s email—printed and ready—was placed in the realtor’s hands.
Short. Clear. Legal. Non-negotiable.
All future communications go through counsel.
No access granted. No consent given. No sale authorized.
The realtor’s face changed immediately.
Professionals know when they’re about to be dragged into something ugly.
She took one step back—subtle, but definitive.
Derek’s cheeks flushed.
“Mom, you can’t do this,” he hissed through clenched teeth.
I finally spoke directly to him.
Not loudly. Not emotionally.
Clean and final.
“I can,” I said. “And I am.”
He tried one last play.
The guilt play.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
That was rich.
Because I could list what I’d done for him in detail.
But I didn’t need to.
One of my former foster children—now a man with a calm voice and a spine of steel—spoke for me.
“Claire raised people to respect her,” he said. “Not to exploit her.”
Derek looked like he’d been slapped.
Not by a hand.
By reality.
The realtor quietly excused herself.
And Derek—who had arrived expecting a signature—was suddenly standing on the porch with nothing.
Nothing except consequences.
