There are moments when you stay quiet to “keep the peace.”
And then there are moments when staying quiet makes you complicit.
This one started with a video call.
My 15-year-old granddaughter Olivia answered with a voice that sounded too small for what she was carrying.
She was sitting on the floor, pale and exhausted.
Both toddlers were climbing on her like she was a playground.
And her arm was still in a sling.
I asked one question that should have had an easy answer:
“Where’s Lydia?”
Olivia didn’t even look surprised.
She just said, “She needed a break.”
That’s when something in me snapped — because Olivia wasn’t the one who signed up to be the help.
And I realized I’d been waiting too long to step in.
