Duke’s voice carried across the blacktop, low and steady. “Your dad rode with us.” A murmur rippled through the teachers and parents. Deputy Ellis didn’t lower his guard, but he stopped advancing.
Principal Lawson’s expression shifted — not relaxed, but reconsidering. Landon blinked. “My dad?” His voice was barely audible. Duke nodded once.
The revelation seemed to hang in the air, heavy with unspoken history. Landon’s heart pounded as he tried to process the unexpected connection. He could feel the eyes of everyone on him, waiting for his reaction.
Deputy Ellis finally lowered his weapon, a signal that the immediate tension was diffusing, but the questions in Landon’s mind only surged stronger.
