The blacktop seemed to expand and contract with the weight of memories unspoken. Landon was torn between disbelief and the strange comfort of belonging, even if just through legacy.
Principal Lawson cleared his throat, attempting to regain control of the situation. “Why don’t we continue this indoors?” he suggested, gesturing towards the school building.
Teachers and parents seemed to agree, slowly dispersing but stealing glances at Landon and Duke. Landon felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Duke offering a faint, encouraging smile.
