Part II – A Home for Three

The ride to the ranch was slow and careful. Harrison helped Martha into the front seat of the wagon so she would feel fewer jolts from the uneven road.

Rebecca sat in the back, holding their small trunk as though it carried their entire past inside it.

The land stretched wide and endless—rolling hills, fields of green, and the sky a vast blue dome above them. Every so often, a bird would dart across their path, the only sign of life in the quiet expanse.

Harrison glanced over at Martha, her face pale and eyes focused on the horizon. He knew she worried about this new life, this unknown future.

He reached over and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll be alright,” he said softly, his voice filled with more confidence than he felt.

Martha nodded, but her gaze didn’t leave the rolling landscape. “I hope so,” she whispered, more to herself than to him.

The wagon creaked and swayed as it made its way along the dusty road. With each mile, the land seemed to grow wilder, more untamed.

Rebecca shifted in her seat, watching her parents with a mix of hope and uncertainty. She knew this move was supposed to be a new beginning for them all.

As the ranch came into view, nestled against the backdrop of a distant mountain range, the air seemed to change—filled with a sense of possibility.

But beneath that hope lay the shadows of their past, lingering just out of sight.
