She already knew.
Instead, she simply said:
“Get dressed. I’m coming to get you.”
“I don’t feel like it.”
“Neither do I.”
“I’d rather stay home.”
“That’s exactly why we’re leaving.”
An hour later, they were sitting together in a small café.
At first, neither of them said much.
Then one memory led to another.
Soon they were laughing about things that happened fifty years ago.
The kind of memories only old friends remember.
For the first time since her husband’s death, she smiled without forcing it.

the pain became lighter.

One afternoon, while shopping together, one of them grabbed a bright red hat.
The others burst out laughing.
“You’ll look ridiculous.”
“Good,” she replied.
“I’ve spent my whole life trying to look respectable.”
They bought colorful scarves.
Bold sunglasses.
Funny jewelry.
Clothes that made them smile.
Not because they wanted attention.
Because they had finally stopped caring what strangers thought.
When you’re young, you worry about fitting in.
When you’re old enough, you realize fitting in was never important.
