There’s another subtle factor most people don’t think about: which AirPod you always take out when someone talks to you.

If you consistently remove the same AirPod every time – say, the right one – that earbud spends more time in power-saving mode, while the other one keeps playing audio.

Over months, this means one side racks up more full discharge–recharge cycles than the other. More cycles usually equal faster battery wear and lower capacity.

The result is “uneven degradation”: one AirPod starts to feel older and weaker long before the other does, even though you bought them at the same time.

Simply switching up which one you pull out – or sometimes pausing your audio altogether – can help keep things more balanced in the long run.
