The man had collapsed just outside the door, grasping for air, and she didn’t think twice before running to help him.
Her instincts took over as she crouched beside him, calling for someone to dial 911 while she tried to make him comfortable.
In a small town, news traveled fast. Within moments, a small crowd had gathered, watching the drama unfold.
By the time the paramedics arrived, she had managed to keep him calm, assuring him help was on its way.
But back inside, her manager saw things differently.
As she re-entered the diner, relief washed over her, knowing the man was in good hands now. But it was short-lived.
Her manager’s voice was cold and unyielding as he pronounced his judgment.
“You abandoned your post,” he said, pointing towards the counter she had left behind.
A part of her wanted to argue, to defend her actions, but the look in his eyes silenced her.
“You’re fired,” he said, words final and irreversible, the weight of them sinking in slowly.
