Why Doctors Say Cigarettes Are Particularly Dangerous
Cigarette smoking remains one of the most well-established preventable causes of serious illness and premature death. The main danger comes from inhaling the thousands of chemicals produced when tobacco burns, including numerous substances known to cause cancer.
These chemicals enter the lungs and can travel throughout the body, damaging blood vessels and contributing to inflammation. Over time, this exposure increases the risk of several potentially life-threatening conditions.
Smoking is strongly linked to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease and stroke. It can also increase the risk of cancers affecting the mouth, throat, bladder, kidneys and other organs.
The damage is not limited to people who smoke heavily for many years. Even smoking relatively few cigarettes can increase cardiovascular risks, and there is no established safe level of cigarette smoking.
Cigarettes also contain nicotine, the highly addictive substance that makes quitting difficult. Nicotine affects the brain’s reward system, encouraging repeated use and making it harder for smokers to break the habit.
However, nicotine is not responsible for all the damage associated with cigarettes. Much of the danger comes from the toxic chemicals created during combustion, which is one reason health experts distinguish between smoking tobacco and using alternative nicotine products.
Is Vaping Really Safer Than Smoking?
Vaping has become increasingly popular among people trying to stop smoking. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes heat a liquid to produce an aerosol that users inhale rather than burning tobacco.
