Standing on the Worn Doorstep of My Childhood Home as My Mother Returns After Years of Silence, Seeking Something I Cannot Name

Instead, I stand silent, feeling the weight of her presence.

It’s a test, this visit, and I’m unsure what she seeks—whether it’s forgiveness, reconciliation, or something else entirely.

She holds a power over me without even trying, her departure years ago leaving a void that I’ve learned to navigate alone.

Every holiday, every missed birthday, every stilted phone call that followed—each one a reminder of the empty space she left behind.

And now she’s here, her sudden presence a reminder of the imbalance that’s always existed between us.
