The Afternoon When Emma’s Laughter Mixed with Unease as She Played Near the Neighbor’s Horse and I Couldn’t Shake the Feeling That Something Was Off

“Is it…is it safe, for Emma to play with him?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Another pause, longer this time.

“I think so, but…we’re being cautious,” she said finally, a hint of hesitation in her words.

It wasn’t the reassurance I’d hoped for, but it was something.

We stood there, the silence stretching between us, filled with the weight of what wasn’t being said.

“Thank you for telling me,” I said, meaning it.

She nodded, a small, grateful smile flickering across her face.
