Every day, I dealt with numbers and reports, but this was different.
It was real, tangible, pressing down with a human urgency I couldn’t ignore.
“I didn’t want to steal,” he added, almost as if convincing himself. “Just… just needed a little help.”
His honesty was disarming, leaving me without the usual defenses of protocol and procedure.
“I understand,” I replied, though the words felt inadequate.
In that moment, I realized the decision was mine alone to make.
