“You just made my assignment more efficient,” Mara said quietly.
Pierce leaned closer, his voice dropping. “If you think you can walk in here and start digging, accidents happen.”
Unfazed, Mara replied, “Then you might want to explain why your secure operations log shows a ‘logistics recalibration’ at 1400 hours today to a location not listed in any authorized movement schedule.”
His brief flicker of surprise told her everything she needed to know.
Inside Colonel Cross’s office, with the door shut and privacy secured, truth replaced performance. “Are you stable?” Cross asked softly.
“Yes,” Mara confirmed. “He wanted a reaction. He didn’t get one.”
Cross’s jaw tightened. “He crossed a line.”
“He crossed more than one,” Mara replied, presenting a tablet with incriminating details.
