THE SECURITY GUARD WHO ALWAYS NODDED AT ME

Every morning before going to work in Quezon City, I would pass through the building lobby where the security guard stood on duty. I always greeted him.

“Good morning, sir,” I would say.

He wasn’t talkative. He wasn’t even the type to smile. But whenever I walked past, he would raise his hand and nod. There was a kind of quiet shyness in him, but also respect. I didn’t know his name, yet he had become part of my daily routine.

One morning, I noticed a bruise on his arm.

“Sir, are you okay?” I asked.

He smiled a little. “I’m fine, ma’am. Just a small thing.”

But there was sadness in his eyes. I wanted to ask more, but I was in a hurry. As the days passed, I never asked again. I never even tried to learn his name. It was as if… I believed I would see him there every single day.

Until the night I will never forget.

I worked overtime until 10 PM. I noticed the building felt unusually quiet. When I went down to the lobby, there wasn’t a single person around. Not even the security guard on duty.

As I reached the door, I was startled when it suddenly opened from the outside.

“Ma’am,” he said, catching his breath. “Please don’t go out yet.”

“Why?!” I asked nervously.

“There are two men who have been watching you for a while. They chased me earlier to ask what time you usually leave. That’s not normal.”

My hands went cold. “What do you mean?!”

“They’ve been following you these past few days,” he said in a low voice. “Whenever you leave, they call someone and ask if you’re the ‘target.’ That’s why you need to go through the back tonight.”

My knees almost gave out when I heard that.

“Sir… how do you know all this?”

He looked straight into my eyes.

“Because… I’m the one they keep pressuring for information about you. But I didn’t give them anything.”

My stomach twisted. “Why… why are you helping me like this?”

He took a deep breath.

“Because, ma’am… last week you dropped your wallet near the gate. I saw the photo inside—of you and your child. I thought… you have a family. You’re a kind person. Even though you don’t know me, you treat me with respect every day. I won’t allow anything bad to happen to you.”

I couldn’t say a word.

He led me to the back exit that was usually locked. Apparently, he had the key.

“Sir… what is your real name?” I asked while we walked through the dark hallway.

He stopped for a moment.

“Gabriel.”

“Gabriel…” I repeated softly. “If it weren’t for you—”

Suddenly he stopped and pushed me against the wall, not because he meant harm… but because a shadow passed in front of us.

Two men. Wearing hoodies. One of them seemed to be holding something metallic in his pocket.

I heard one whisper.

“Are you sure she’ll pass here?”

“She won’t leave without coming through this way. I’ll get the information from that security guard.”

My fear grew even stronger. But Gabriel? He wasn’t afraid. He held my arm and whispered:

“Ma’am… run. Don’t look back.”

So we ran.

Fast, quiet, breathless. He led me toward the maintenance exit near the old parking shed.

When the men heard us moving, they shouted.

“Hey! They’re there!”

I heard heavy footsteps getting closer. But instead of continuing to run, Gabriel turned to face them.

“Sir! No! Don’t!” I shouted.

But he simply raised his hand to silence me.

“Ma’am, it’s my job to protect you. From the moment you started saying ‘good morning’ every day, I already knew I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you.”

Then everything happened at once.

A shout.A punch.A body hitting the ground.

The sounds mixed together.

Until bright lights appeared—police officers had arrived. The two men ran, but one of them was quickly caught.

And Gabriel?

He was lying on the ground, breathing heavily but still alive. His face was scratched, and blood ran from his lip.

“Gabriel!” I knelt beside him. “I’m so sorry… this happened because of me—”

He shook his head weakly.

“Ma’am… I don’t need your apology.”

He gently took my hand.

“I just need you to know… that you matter. And sometimes… just one smile from someone is enough to make another person willing to protect them.”

I cried. I couldn’t stop it.

“Gabriel… thank you.”

He smiled—the first real smile I had ever seen from him.

“Good evening, ma’am.”

The next day, we learned the truth.

The two men were part of an online scam group that harassed people who refused to pay them. And me? They had gotten my number from a leaked database months ago.

I really had been their target.

Gabriel helped give testimony. Gabriel was the reason I was safe.

And from that day on, we were no longer strangers.

One day, I brought him some food.

“Gabriel… can you call me by my name now?”

He smiled. “What’s your name, ma’am?”

“Lia.”

“Good morning, Miss Lia.”

And I never imagined that the simple greeting I used to say every morning… would one day be the reason my life was saved.

Sometimes… you don’t need to know someone right away—because one day, they may be the very reason you realize how powerful kindness can be, even in the smallest things.
