The room fell silent. Javier looked shocked, while Carmen nodded discreetly from the front row. I continued, “Before I explain why, I want to share something I overheard an hour ago.”
A murmur rippled through the room. Carmen clutched her chest in confusion, and Javier paled. “I heard my fiancé say he doesn’t care about me, only my money. And his mother agreed with him,” I declared.
The audience reacted with disbelief. Javier stepped forward, trying to save face. “Maria, you’re mistaken,” he pleaded, forcing a smile. “You must have misunderstood…”
“No,” I interrupted firmly. “I understood perfectly. And I took precautions.”
I retrieved a white envelope from the bouquet I was holding. The judge frowned but remained silent. Carmen began to breathe heavily. “Here are copies of documents I signed two weeks ago,” I explained, “stating that my company and assets remain exclusively mine, even in marriage.”
Javier’s face fell apart. “What did you do?” he whispered. “What I had to do,” I replied, “because love isn’t about seeing someone as a bank account.”
Carmen stood abruptly, shouting, “This is a humiliation! My son doesn’t deserve this!”
