What She Did Instead
Maya didn’t touch the valuables.
She didn’t even look at them.
She noticed the cold draft instead.
Without hesitation, she draped a blanket over him.
Her voice barely carried:
“I wish you didn’t have to be so alone, Mr. Whitmore.”
Something cracked in his chest.
Then she picked up the diamond watch.
Logan’s breath froze.
But she only wiped a smudge away with her own handkerchief.
Placed it back exactly where it had been.
Before leaving, she set down a pressed yellow daisy and a folded note.
When Logan finally opened his eyes, his hands were shaking.
The note read:
“Some people have everything except kindness. You’re not one of them.”
That night, Logan didn’t sleep.
Not from anger.
From shame.
